East Spring's Quiet Architect’s Retreat
Recently reimagined by Matthew Bremer of Architecture in Formation (NYC), this bright, beautifully composed cottage is the architect’s own beach retreat—tucked away on a quiet street in East Springs, one of the most peaceful and creative corners of East Hampton.
East Springs sits closer to the bay than the ocean, and the feeling is different here—softer light, slower mornings, and a long-standing community of artists, writers, and makers who have always been drawn to its calm, residential rhythm. It’s a place for bike rides to the water, spontaneous coffee runs, and evenings that stretch gently into night.
Inside, the mood is casual, curated, and quietly luxurious. The kitchen features custom stainless cabinetry, a SMEG range, Sub-Zero refrigeration, and hand-glazed Heath Ceramics tilework. Each bedroom offers a queen bed dressed in crisp white linens, along with thoughtfully designed built-in desks and integrated storage.
Outdoors, generous, leafy spaces invite slow breakfasts, long lunches, and unhurried evenings under the trees.
Why we love this cottage
We love how the architecture quietly frames the light. The home has been reworked with a deep sensitivity to proportion, sightlines, and flow—so every room feels connected, calm, and effortlessly usable. Daylight moves gently through the space from morning to late afternoon, catching the hand-glazed tile, softening the stainless surfaces, and creating subtle shifts in mood as the day unfolds.
Rather than relying on dramatic gestures, the design lets restraint do the work: carefully placed openings, thoughtful built-ins, and a layout that gives each space its own rhythm while still feeling open and continuous. Designed as the architect’s own escape, the home feels deeply personal and quietly confident—an environment made for reading, cooking, hosting friends, and doing very little at all. It’s the kind of architecture you feel more than notice, where light becomes part of the experience, not just the backdrop.
